Making money from AdSense—too easy?
Nov 3rd, 2007 by Nut
Take a look at this USA Today article, it’s about seniors using the internet to make money.
I think it’s really interesting and great that older people are getting into computers and spending their time doing something they really enjoy. That they are making some money off it is also fantastic.
But the article is severely flawed. It simplifies the whole process of learning how to use a computer, how to surf the web, and how to blog.
It’s the surface version of a deeper, very intricate topic.
That these people “learned to blog” and “quickly set up a site” is problematic because—unless these are just extremely unique stories (in which case they shouldn’t be written about in such an encouraging way—think of weight-loss infomercials)—it’s not that easy.
To the average reader (or, heaven forbid, senior citizen) they may think “Oh hey, these people are just writing about something they like and they put The AdSense on there and lookety all the money puring in. I can to that.”
Sure you can. Anyone can. Just don’t expect to get checks in the mail for $200 dollars a week right away.

It seems to me after reading the article that it is more of an infomercial than a how to do article. But it does point out that there are no win situations in the blogosphere and that getting your feet wet is just the start. Personally, I liked the article because its examples - more pages mean more ads for one - are useful as reminders of the many ways it is possible to make money from this environment.

I still don’t really get how AdSense works. Do you just get paid when people click on it? If so, how in the world does that really end up being profitable? I never click on those ads; do other people?
GG, people click on ads that interest them. if you don’t find anything interesting, you won’t click on them.
