Best Job Search Ever
Dec 18th, 2007 by Nut
Going out there and looking for a new job can be really frustrating. It can make you feel nervous, inadequate, and just plain bad. But I am really enjoying the search for a job as a copywriter in an agency.
Why?
- Nothing other than my portfolio matters. My resume is out the door. Whatever connections I may or may not have can help, sure, but I won’t get hired just because of them. It all comes down to me creating the best ads I can and being judged on that piece of work. If it’s good, I’m in. If not, I need to get better. There’s something very merit-based about it that I like a lot. I just have to be good.
- The process of creating my portfolio is a preview of the job I want. Except I’m not getting paid and I’m doing it on the side of a full-time job, of course. But sitting down and coming up with crazy new ways to sell investment products or paper towels is really fun. It’s a creative field and that comes with certain frustrations, but in my eyes it beats anything else out there.
- I know this is what I want. After I graduated college I applied to so many different types of positions because I had no idea what the hell I wanted to do in my life. It’s a horrible feeling when you read through the list of “qualifications” for a job and you say to yourself, “I could do that, I could do that, hmmmm… I don’t know about that one, I guess I would do that.” I know 100% that I want to be a copywriter at an agency. This narrows my focus and increases my motivation exponentially.
Of course, as much as I’m enjoying it, I wish it were over tomorrow so I could get to the whole business of actually working instead of searching for a job.
Note: After I read through this I was like “What the hell are you talking about?” I guess it was a good day when I wrote that because usually it’s a miserable, frustrating thing looking for a job. But this is part of it—on some days it goes well and ideas are plentiful, while other times nothing happens and you feel like you suck at life. This comes with any creative field and it happens in copywriting. Just check out Comma Heavy for more harrowing details.
