Monthly Archive for December, 2007

Ok so the vacation has me rethinking a lot of things and right now I feel like most people probably will in January: I have a resolution and I’m really motivated to accomplish it.
Now to actually go through with it without getting lazy or losing my focus.
I’ve realized that, for now, my number one goal [...]

Following your dreams and money

This blog tries to tie writing and personal finance together by leaning on the assumption that writing is a poor person’s sport.
And for the most part, it is. But since we’re kids we’ve heard the mantra repeated to us over and over again: Do what you love and the money will follow.
I don’t think [...]

Post-vacation high

So I was off work for several days, didn’t check my email for over a week, ate at nice restaurants every day, and stayed at incredibly peaceful, charming hotels.
Of course I feel great.
The unplugging was great, but there was also an added bonus: one of the friends I went with that I spent a lot [...]

Practical reading

Another aborted book. This time it’s The Coast of Chicago by Stuart Dybek. The first few stories weren’t bad (there was one I remember from Best American Short Stories: “Chopin in Winter,” which is great) but after Chopin it just got very boring and very slow. Writerly Links

I have really gotten into the whole blogger community when it comes to the personal finance and advertising portions of this site. But I’ve really struggled to find (or to look hard enough) other places (blogs) to really link to and interact when it comes to literary writing.
Part of this may be the perception (which [...]

Aborted Reviews

I used to never leave a book unfinished. I would plow through even the most boring book before moving on to the next one.
Not anymore. Over the past week I started and quit two books: The Art of Fiction by John Gardner and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
A teacher had recommended the first [...]

It is my pleasure to present this guest post from Toad over at The Toad Stool, a great advertising site. He has been kind enough in the past to give me some feedback on some of my ads on Ad Friday(s). He’s been kind enough (again) to share his expertise with those of us trying [...]

I’m intrigued by Obama—he may or may not be the president I’ve been wanting for a long time. Maybe.
But even if he isn’t, if this whole honesty and change bit of his is just that, a bit, then at least he’s the first one to really make me believe it.
In the piece, the crux of [...]
