A Turning Point
Mar 10th, 2008 by Nut
Well, it’s been about a week since my last post and a few things have happened that have kept me from writing. First of all, I got some kind of flu/plague hybrid that kicked my butt and kept me in bed for four days straight. I’m still not recovered but at least right now I can sit down and get some thoughts out in a semi-coherent way. I couldn’t read, write, or do anything other than watch those crazy movie clips on Spike TV.
The second thing that happened was that I had a kind of awakening in terms of this blog and my writing in general. I received my latest copy of Poets & Writers and in the awards section I saw someone from grad school that had won another award a few months ago. I was excited for this person but part of me was also like “What have I been doing?” And it hit me: I haven’t written anything since I moved into my new place, which was around six months ago. Most of my time has been devoted to this blog.
I still like writing about personal finance and investing, but I realize that the promise of alternative income is what has kept me posting on here on a day to day basis. Nothing wrong with that, but I don’t want to wake up in 20 years and ask myself, “Didn’t you want to be a writer?” I also ran into a blog called Genius Types, which is run by a guy who is a business guy and an artist. His blog is all about that dichotomy and he wrote something about being on a once-a-day posting schedule that really hit me:
When a blogger starts to write just to meet her daily quota instead of writing lasting content, the residual component of her work is greatly diminished. When a blogger starts writing for her daily readers instead of the readers that will discover her site years in the future; she is killing the goose to get to the golden eggs.
So from now on I’m going to post on personal finance when a subject really moves me, not just about every little thing I can think of in order to fill a daily quota. If that means twice a week then that’s what it’ll be.
What am I going to be doing with all the time that this will open up for me? Write. I can’t keep ignoring the fact that I’m ignoring my dream of writing, so I’m going to do something about it and I’m going to write. Every day. Fiction.
I’ll be writing more about that here too, because that’s what this blog what meant to cover: writing and personal finance.

I wouldn’t say that you have written anything in 6 months. This blog alone is proof that you have been indeed writing.
