Money In the Bank
Apr 22nd, 2008 by Nut
So I went to the ATM the other day to deposit a check and as the machine is supposed to spit out my receipt, a small piece of paper is slowly squeezed out. I’m confused until I pull it out—it’s the person who was here before me’s receipt. The machine maybe malfunctioned or something so the person didn’t get it, I did.
So being a curious guy I take a look. The person before me had taken out $20 in cash and had $42 left in their account.
I was shocked.
I have to have a minumum of $750 in my account and here this person had taken out a third of all their money. Sure, they might have another account or several other accounts, but if got me thinking. How does this person feel right now, walking to work with $20 in their pocket and $40 left in the account? Is he/she stressed out? Wondering how they are going to make more money before the end of the month? Do they dream of making it big in life?
Or maybe it’s just some rich dude’s secondary account. Maybe he uses it to buy flowers for his side booty, whom he keeps in a nice apartment downtown. Who knows, but seeing that the account only had $40 left in it made me feel very responsible.
I started thinking of all the accounts I have and how much money is in each of them (granted, I’m not spending any of it, but still) and I felt really good about myself. Then the naive teenager in me (I’m 27) felt sorry for the people out there who struggle day to day to even have enough money in the account for groceries and stuff. What right do I have to complain when I’m more worried about having a big enough down payment and not keeping food in my stomach?

It all depends on how your accounts are setup. Our primary account is a joint account that usually has quite a bit of money in it. However, both me and the fiancee have separate accounts for our own personal spending money. Those accounts usually have $100 or less in them. When I go to the ATM I usually pull money out of that account because I’m usually going to go spend money for fun when I use cash.
do you not have an emergency fund with atleast three times your bills for the month? I would figure you keep a minimum of $50,000.00 in your bank at a time.
