Good Stuff I’ve Read Recently
Apr 28th, 2008 by Nut
I hate doing entire posts dedicated to simply putting up links to other stuff on the web, but recently I’ve found a bunch of really good stuff to read and I wanted to share them with you, so here you go:
- This guy Hates Bloggers: It’s all in jest, of course, but he brings up some good points about why bloggers are so eager to be out there covering things for such little pay. It’s a really interesting phenomenon.
- Bullet Proof your Career: Some good tips to bullet proof your career. These have been out a lot lately with the state of the economy. But it all comes down to #1: make yourself indispensable.
- Bashing Index Funds: Yahoo’s TechTicker is a site I’ve been checking out lately, and the videos are sort of interesting. But this particular argument is about the pluses and minuses of index funds. The one guy who hates index funds thinks it’s for the complacent that don’t mind “matching” the “mediocre” market. The guy seems to just be pushing buttons, because let’s be serious—the average person doesn’t have the time or the knowledge to successfully buy and sell stocks year in and year out. As you all know, I’m a big fan of index funds, but I also invest in specific stocks too.
- Gap Year, Good Tips: I’ve always thought this was a great idea for most people. It’s not for everyone, but this article has some great tips to make sure those that do are prepared and have done their homework.
- Ethanol is Not Evil: I’m sick of hearing about how evil ethanol is and what a terrible thing it is. The argument has some very specific merits when it comes to subsidies and corn-based ethanol. But I’ve been to a sugar mill and I’ve seen how they created an ethanol plant next door to use every bit of sugar cane to create sugar and ethanol. And it’s incredibly efficient. Brazil is a great example of how this can work, and this article brings some sanity to the whole ethanol-bashing discussion.
- Retailers are after your Rebate: Interesting. A lot of retailers are offering to give consumers the amount of their rebate plus 10% if they spend it at their stores. Talk about desperation.
- Remember Everything: This is a fascinating look at one man’s quest to find a system to make our memories remember things like learning a language. As someone who is absolutely obsessed with all things memory related, this one is a great read.
