Alternative Income — August
Sep 4th, 2008 by Nut

Here are my numbers for the alternative income I made in August. I’m happy to report that this beats my all time record of income for a month, despite not having any freelance income or any ING referrals. Why so much then? Well, I set a new high for my Adsense income, which is nice even though I expected it to be higher after getting some ridiculous amount of traffic this month. I got another trickle of Amazon income too, but the real reason is the almost doubling of my ING Savings income. Sure, it’s just the interest on my balance and it’s just going straight back into the account, but it counts. The reason why it’s almost doubled is because it’s the first full month that M and I have our joint account funded with all the money we got from our wedding. So that should have an * on there because it’s shared money with M, it isn’t just mine. Plus it’ll all go away as soon as we buy a place, which will hopefully be next year.
Lately I’ve been asking myself if this money I’m making is “worth it.” And by that I mean worth all the effort I’m putting into this blog. It’s a fair amount of work and time that I put in when I feel like I should be writing fiction. My fiction, unfortunately, can’t be instantly published and viewed by a small crowd of people. It takes longer to write, to edit and to see the world. Blogging may pay a little, but fiction pays even less. I seem to be hooked on my Adsense and Analytics stats and that’s not a good thing. Bad, very bad. So I have to wean myself off the stats and make sure I’m doing this for the right reasons (whatever those are), or scale back on my time commitment to this and focus more on my other writing.

Hang in there…the income will come, eventually, and you are already making strides in increasing it month-over-month. I personally enjoy your writing here and would encourage you to continue–if nothing else to provide a forum for sharing your thoughts on finances, and any other “non-fiction topics.”
