Freelance Job

So last week I had a week to go until deadline and the parameters were changed on me. Very casually. All of the sudden there was more work—WAY more. So I fidgeted and hemmed and hawed and just plugged away. Well Thursday is the deadline and I have been killing myself to get it all done.

It’s too much and it’s a lot more than we agreed to.

Since it’s my first real freelance job I just want to get it all done by the date I promised it by and get a great recommendation for the future. This gig also involves a smaller, monthly project that we are extending indefinitely into the future.

But last night it got to me.

So I sent a nice email saying that, since the work had changed, the terms would need to change too. I basically said “pick one: more money or more time.”

I can get it all done by Thursday, it’s going to suck the life out of me, but it’ll get done. I much rather just go at the pace I planned and wait another week.

What do the experienced freelancers out there think? Did I do OK? Is my employer totally out of line?

PS. It’s also because of this crazy work that so many ideas are kind of lingering and the blog isn’t posting as much. It’s the first time I haven’t been able to really write everything I want on the blog and it’s a frustrating feeling. More to come after all this is done, I promise.

if he changed the work, you can change the pay/time.
