Freelancing

So here’s an exciting bit of news: Yesterday I got my very first freelance contract sent to me (right after I wrote about it, too). I will be proofreading a medical book and the accompanying website, as well as a monthly newsletter that comes with it.

I’m curious what kind of fees people out there that freelance (write, edit, or proof) charge. Per word? Per page? Per hour?

Since I’m starting out, I kind of gave a rough estimate and it will be interesting to see how long it takes me to get the work done. I’ll time myself closely to figure how much I’m making per hour and I’ll be able to use it as a measuring stick for my next job.

Have an hourly rate (you can find the going rate in your area online) that you can quote, but be prepared to estimate for the entire project.
