Giving to Charity as a Celebrity

I read this article in the New York Times and it made me sick. The headlines says it all:

A-Rod’s Properties and Charity Suggest Some Stinginess

It goes on to detail how some of the people that live in his apartment buildings hold him accountable for things like moldy mattresses sitting outside one of the buildings.

It just rails on him for not giving enough and how inconsistent these investments are with his “persona” of a kind, rich player.

Enough of this crap. The man gives to charity. Does he give as much as Tiger Woods or Warren Buffett or Bill Gates? No. So what? If most of us “regular people” were in his situation, we would probably give just enough or even less. We are all greedy, let’s be honest. It’s easy to say that because he makes that much money he should hand over a larger chunk, but the people that are most vocal about that are those that wouldn’t want anyone telling them what to do with their money to begin with.

I’m not a rich person, but if I was I know I would give to charity. At least I tell myself that because it makes me feel better. Would I give it all away like Warren B. is doing? Umm, no. I’m not that nice of a person, I’ll admit to that.

But it makes me sick that celebrities are being singled out for not giving enough by the media and then the regular folk chime in as well with their barbed attacks. Chill out people. Unless you give more than those people give, keep your mouths shut and stop criticizing those you envy because they have what you don’t.

Sheesh.
