How do you Spend Your Time?
Oct 13th, 2009 by Carlos
I obsess over how I spend my time almost as much as how I spend my money.
When I get really philosophical about stuff, I’m one of those people that are like, “We only have a set amount of time in this life, so we should take advantage of it.”
PUKE, right? But there’s something to that cliché and so I decided to break out how I spend most of my time. I already know what I want to cut out of my “time budget,” but seeing it visually is always helpful.
It’s kind of depressing to see how much of my time is spent sleeping and sitting at my desk at work. Pretty crazy, but it also reinforces the thinking that I should be very picky with the other parts of the pie.
Ideally, I’d spend less time watching TV and more time reading.
Here’s my ideal scenario:
See the differences? I’m cool with the sleeping—I can handle feeling a little tired every now and then if it means I have more time to do stuff like reading, blogging, and —hello!— writing.
And by writing I mean creative writing. The kind of writing I used to do on a regular basis but have gotten away from over the years.
I want to feel like I did during NaNoWriMo.
What did I sacrifice? Well, this goes into one of the challenges I want to set for myself: to go without TV for a week.
Hopefully I’ll recreate the incredible time I had in Paris all those years ago when all I had was a stack of books, a mattress on the floor, and a couple of windows.
It was awesome. I would literally read until I fell asleep. Then I’d wake up, have a glass of water, write for an hour, and read for another hour. Then I’d fall asleep again, wake up, and go out for a walk in the streets of Paris.
My God I wish I could recreate those days…

That’s why I’m saving my money – so I can retire early (and perhaps spend extra time in Paris), and do nothing but creative reading and writing! Sounds so ideal… I get that feeling every once in a while on a weekend (like you did during NaNoWriMo).
[...] How do you Spend Your Time?: I shudder to think of how my time is spent; I am not good at optimizing my days. This part of the article made me smile, though: “Hopefully I’ll recreate the incredible time I had in Paris all those years ago when all I had was a stack of books, a mattress on the floor, and a couple of windows.
