I’ve been meaning to start this for the longest time, but today I’m finally doing it. I just want to share some of the best articles I’ve read from the past week. Some of them are money related and some aren’t.

But they’re all worth your time.

The Power of the First SentenceThis is great advice for writers, but you should also think about this with everything you do. First impressions count for a lot, especially when it comes to writing. This is why I typically hate the fiction in the New Yorker…it doesn’t grab you right away, instead relying on the fact that it’s a story in the New Yorker.

Paying Your Dues and an Entry-Level EmployeeOne of my favorite new sites is WorkAwesome, and this post is something every employee should think about. Don’t bitch and whine about having to do inane jobs or tasks. It’s very unbecoming. Just put your head down, do them, and don’t roll your eyes. It will pass and people will notice that you never dogged it.

How a Soccer Star is MadeI am really pumped about the World Cup, especially since I grew up in Guatemala and as a kid I remember how exciting it was when this time of year came around. Anyway, here is a great story on how the Dutch team Ajax grooms young players and how differently the world grooms world-class athletes vs. the way America does it. A fascinating read that closes with a 5-year old “prospect” that a scout is in a tizzy about. Wow.

The Art of Doing Remarkable ThingsThis is a great interview with the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance, Stephen Pressfield. He talks about the Resistance, the voice inside of us that keeps us from getting things done like writing, starting a new venture, etc. Kind of a mystical/spiritual take on things, but still a great listen.
